Busy 2020 Construction Season for SMW Local 24 Members

There appears to be plenty of work expected for Sheet Metal Worker Local 24 members in 2020.

Building trades leaders in Columbus and Dayton said collectively, their members worked record hours in 2019 and as of now, are predicting similar numbers for 2020. In Lima, major refinery work is set to wrap up, but members should stay busy thanks to numerous hospital projects.

In the Columbus area, major datacenter projects are currently underway or just about set to begin for internet giants Amazon, Facebook and Google. Continue reading →

SMW Local 24 Members Donate Items to Homeless Veterans

Members of Sheet Metal Workers Local 24 made sure Cincinnati area’s homeless veterans were not forgotten.

Thanks to the generosity of Local 24 members and signatory contractors, more than 100 homeless veterans living in southwestern Ohio received personal care packages.

Volunteers from the Local 24 Women’s Committee and SMART Army assemble care packages for homeless veterans.

During September and October, members of the SMART Local 24 Women’s Committee and SMART Army collected personal care items in order to create care packages. Continue reading →

Linden Park Project to be Built Under a Community Benefits Agreement

Work in the City of Columbus to build a new recreation center and update a city park will be performed by affiliated members of the Columbus/Central Ohio Building and Construction Trades Council under a Community Benefits Agreement.

The $25 million Linden Park project is expected to create between 60 and 80 jobs for members of the C/COBCTC and for members of Sheet Metal Workers Local 24. Continue reading →

Community Benefits Agreement covers new Columbus Fire Station project

On Oct. 17, ground was broken for the construction of Columbus Fire Station No. 35, which is the first City of Columbus project to be built under a new Community Benefits Agreement.

The work to build the new 26,750-square-foot fire station will create between 50-70 jobs for members of the Columbus/Central Ohio Building and Construction Trades Council, including members of Sheet Metal Workers Local 24.

Under terms of the agreement, residents of the City of Columbus must complete 20 percent or more of the total project work hours, while at least 25 percent of total project work hours must be completed by tradesmen and tradeswomen who live in Franklin County or adjacent counties. Appeals Court Rules in Favor of Residency Requirements on Public Projects

Ohio’s 8^th District Court of Appeals ruled House Bill 180, which banned residency requirements on public construction projects, as unconstitutional.

The ruling upheld a Cleveland residency law that requires contractors who successfully bid on certain public construction projects within the city, to guarantee 20 percent of the hours worked must be performed by Cleveland residents, and 4 percent of that 20 percent must be allocated for low-income Cleveland residents.

By striking down H.B. 180, the court has granted chartered municipalities the right to enforce hiring requirements on certain publicly-funded construction projects. This means cities such as Columbus, Dayton and Cincinnati can require contractors hire a designated percentage of their residents to work on certain construction projects. Continue reading →

City of Columbus Signs Historic Community Benefits Agreement with Building Trades

The City of Columbus and the Columbus/Central Ohio Building and Construction Trades Council signed a historic Community Benefits Agreement (CBA) to partner together to ensure the work to construct Columbus Fire Station No. 35 is performed by the area’s building trades.

The CBA also requires the C/COBCTC to host apprenticeship-recruitment fairs and to contribute 5 cents per hour worked on the project, to be deposited into a scholarship fund for apprenticeship programs.

“This agreement includes many firsts for our city, all built on my commitment to expanding Columbus’ success to every person in every neighborhood,” said Columbus Mayor Andrew Ginther. “This agreement offers the City and its residents many benefits.”

The Jan. 26 career fair was an opportunity for Columbus/Central Ohio Building and Construction Trades affiliated unions, such as Sheet Metal Workers Local 24, to reach out directly to potential apprentice candidates.
