OSBCTC Conference Stresses Recruitment Of Next Generation Of Workers

The Ohio State Building and Construction Trades Council hosted a conference for building trades leaders from across the state to discuss the 21st-century workforce for its affiliated union trades.

The event, held June 22 at the IBEW Local 683 Union Hall in Columbus, brought together leaders of regional building trades councils, business managers, business representatives, organizers and JATC training coordinators to listen to featured speakers and participate in other sessions. 

Russ Ormiston, Associate Professor at Allegheny College, was the keynote speaker and discussed how demographics and labor statistics relate to successful member recruitment in today’s tight labor market. Continue reading →

Ohio State Building Trades hosts opioid summit in Columbus

The Ohio State Building and Construction Trades Council hosted an opioid summit in Columbus at the Hollywood Casino to address why and how Ohioans, including construction workers, are falling victim to opioids.

According to the National Institute on Drug Abuse, in 2017 there were 4,293 opioid deaths in Ohio, which equates to 39.2 deaths per 100,000 people. The Buckeye trailed only West Virginia, which recorded 833 opioid deaths – a rate of 49.6 deaths per 100,000 people. Continue reading →

Rick Perdue elected President of Lima Building Trades

Sheet Metal Workers Local 24 Dayton District Business Representative Rick Perdue was recently elected as the new President of the Lima Building Trades.

Perdue, who served as the Vice President, replaced Mike Knisley, who retired in the summer after the Ohio State Building and Construction Trades Council Executive Board unanimously voted him as their next Secretary-Treasurer. Knisley served in this unpaid leadership role for 11 years in addition to also being the Business Manager of UA Local 776 for 14 years. Continue reading →

Knisley Voted Ohio State Building Trades Council Secretary-Treasurer

Douglas to replace Knisley as State President

Mike Knisley, former president of the Ohio State Building and Construction Trades Council, was elected to serve as the new Secretary-Treasurer of the State Building Trades Council.

In addition to serving as the State president, Knisley recently retired from his position as Business Manager of UA Local 776, where he served for 14 years. He also retired as President of the Lima Building Trades, a position he held for 11 years.

Duffey Retires as Secretary-Treasurer of State Building Trades Council

Dennis Duffey, who served the Ohio State Building and Construction Trades Council for nearly a decade as Secretary-Treasurer, retired on Sept. 1.

Duffey, who during his 45-year career served as the IBEW Local 8 Business Manager and past President of the Northwest Ohio Building Trades, was one of the driving forces behind the creation of Affiliated Construction Trades (ACT) Ohio. Continue reading →
