Amazon Web Services will invest almost $8 billion to expand their datacenter presence in Central Ohio.

This project will be the second-largest private-sector construction project in the history of Ohio, falling behind Intel’s $100 billion project. This project will create thousands of jobs in the construction industry, including jobs for members of Sheet Metal Workers Local 24.

“Today we are proud to reinforce our long-term commitment to the State of Ohio with plans to expand and invest an estimated $7.8 billion by 2030,” Roger Wehner, AWS Director of Economic Development, said in a prepared statement on June 26. “Since 2015, AWS has invested more than $6 billion in Ohio while supporting thousands of local jobs.”

The project will push the Buckeye State ahead, making Ohio a nationwide leader in technology and innovation.

“AWS was the first mover in Ohio among the major technology companies, and their success has helped pave the way for the explosive growth we’re seeing now,” said JP Nauseef, President and CEO of JobsOhio.

He added their newest investment will create 230 direct new jobs and an estimated 1,000 support jobs. This includes jobs for members of Local 24.

As of this time, no site has been officially announced, but the land is expected to be in the Columbus area.

Additionally, It is unclear on the exact number of tradesmen and tradeswomen who will be needed to work on the project or if the work will be performed under some type of Project Labor Agreement.

Amazon’s other Central Ohio facilities were not built under such an agreement but go to union contractors.

This project will offer many job opportunities for Sheet Metal Workers.
