In the wake of the coronavirus pandemic, Sheet Metal Workers Local 24 came to the aid of first responders by donating PPE pieces.
Members of the Local, working for signatory contractors, made and donated metal nose pieces to be used in face masks.
This community-minded work is part of a union-wide effort, as members took time from their normal work to make the tiny, but critical pieces.
The metal is cut flat into a small strip and used as a nose bridge in the mask for extra protection and comfort.
Once the pieces were cut, they were sent to the Local District office, where they are counted, boxed and shipped. These pieces are being distributed to volunteers across the country who are hand-sewing masks to donate to front line workers and first responders, who need PPE.
“The Local is very proud to be a part of such a large collective effort being organized by SMART Army,” said Local 24 Business Manager Rodney French, referencing the Community Action initiative launched by the International Association of Sheet Metal, Air, Rail and Transportation Workers.
French credited the efforts of all involved for helping those on the front line of the coronavirus pandemic.
“It would not be possible without the extra time being put in on nights and weekends by the officers of the Local or the many signatory contractors, who have donated time and the material to manufacture the nose pieces for this effort, as well as all the Local 24 members who have helped in the process,” he added.
Local 24 provided over 75,000 nose pieces to volunteers sewing masks all over Ohio and surrounding states.
Across the U.S., SMART has sent out over 12 million pieces for PPE use.
